Post Doctoral Fellow - Center for Rare Childhood Disorders
Post Date:Aug 25, 2017Type:Full time
Start Date:- n/a -Salary:- n/a -
Location: United States   Arizona - Phoenix Job Reference:- n/a -

Seeking a highly qualified Ph.D. scientist to pursue biological validation studies that arise from genetic discoveries made at the Center for Rare Childhood Disorders (C4RCD). Such studies include cell biological, molecular biological, and animal modeling to probe mechanisms of disease and eventually lead to novel therapeutic approaches for neurogenetic disorders. Successful candidate will participate in the design, execution, troubleshooting, interpretation, presentation and publication of experimental studies. Participation in writing of research proposals funding opportunities is also expected.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Projects will be developed in conjunction with faculty members in the Narayanan Lab and the C4RCD, within Neurogenomics Division at TGen. Currently planned projects include development and complete characterization of mouse models of specific neurogenetic disorders. Prior experience working with animal models of disease is essential.

The successful candidate will be involved in the planning, execution and interpretation of experiments, and be an integral part of the Narayanan Lab and the C4RCD. Participation in all laboratory and departmental meetings is expected. There are ample opportunities for collaboration with others within the Neurogenomics Division and with other TGen laboratories.

It is expected that the work emanating from these projects will be presented at national meetings (neuroscience or human genetics), as well as laboratory and departmental meetings. The candidate will have the primary responsibility for writing scientific papers that arise from this research, and assisting in the development and writing of grant proposals (postdoctoral fellowships).

Currently planned projects:
We are in the early stages of developing two specific mouse models, that we expect will contribute to our understanding of specific neurological disorders: a) Crisponi syndrome / CISS1, caused by mutation of the CRLF1 gene; b) mitochondrial encephalopathy caused by a specific recurring mutation of the MTFMT gene.
The first project will involve producing a conditional allele of CRLF1 using already available ES cells, and then using specific CRE driver animals to investigate the effect tissue-specific knock-out of CRLF1.
The second project will involve establishing a heterozygous MTFMT mutant mouse line, and then a detailed characterization of MTFMT homozygous animals.

About TGen
Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a Phoenix, Arizona-based non-profit organization dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life changing results. TGen is focused on helping patients with neurological disorders, cancer, and diabetes, through cutting edge translational research (the process of rapidly moving research towards patient benefit). TGen physicians and scientists work to unravel the genetic components of both common and rare complex diseases in adults and children. Working with collaborators in the scientific and medical communities literally worldwide, TGen makes a substantial contribution to help our patients through efficiency and effectiveness of the translational process. TGen is allied with City of Hope, a world-renowned independent research and cancer and diabetes treatment center. This precision medicine alliance enables both institutes to complement each other in research and patient care, with City of Hope providing a significant clinical setting to advance scientific discoveries made by TGen. For more information, visit: www.tgen.org.

Ph.D. in cell or molecular biology, neuroscience, or related field. Will consider those with prior post-doctoral research experience. Candidate should be experienced in cell and molecular biology, with specific experience in working with animal models (mice, genetically engineered mice). Proficiency in appropriate data analysis tools (statistical packages) is expected.
